Groede

Groede

Welcome in... beautiful Groede, once known as De Groe among the locals, a gem in Zeeland-Flanders and absolutely worth a visit. So, what is there to do in Groede? Plenty of
things! This small artistic village is bustling with conviviality and history.

Artistic Groede

Groede is a delightful picturesque artists' village and looks as pretty as picture. The village is teeming with dozens of artists who work there. Their work can be admired at permanent or temporary exhibitions.

The history of Groede

Groede exudes history: you can see it as soon as you enter the charming centre. The stately Grote Kerk (Great Church) proudly stands in the middle of Groede's main square: Markt. The church is adorned with a red cross, meaning that Groede used to be a Red Cross village. In other words, absolutely no fighting was allowed here during wars, so thankfully, the village
was spared in World War II.

Sightseeing

In addition to its rich history, Groede also has some fabulous sights worth visiting. Why not visit Waterdunen, for example, for a hiking or cycling trip on one of the trails through this nature reserve. Waterdunen is a recreational area in the municipality of Sluis in Zeeland Flanders, located between Cadzand and Breskens near Groede. With a whopping 250 hectares of accessible tidal nature, it forms a harmonious interplay between water and land, salt and fresh, and ebb and flow. What's more, it is a veritable paradise for migratory birds. If you prefer to stay indoors, a visit to 'Het Vlaemsche Erfgoed' might be just the ticket. This heritage museum offers a nostalgic view of daily life a century ago. The museum is housed in a row of contiguous cottages on Slijkstraatje. You will find a bakery, blacksmith shop and carpenter's workshop on this street, among other things. The tickets you can buy at the heritage store gives access to all the shops on the street. It's the perfect outing for grandparents to reminisce about days gone by with their grandchildren.

Beach

In addition to charming streets, Groede also boasts a beautiful beach, which is among the cleanest in the Netherlands and recognisable by the flying blue flag. Groede by the sea offers sweeping views since there are no buildings on the dunes, so you can enjoy the peace and beautiful nature here. The extensive dune area with paved paths also offers excellent
opportunities for hiking or cycling and relaxing. You can even spend the night in one of the beach cabins right on the beach. Groede beach is also an excellent spot to take a break with little ones. You will find all manner of shells to collect here. Build sandcastles, take a refreshing dip in the sea, play a ballgame on the beach or simply enjoy the beautiful weather.

Dining out in Groede

Being a real gourmet village, Groede offers plenty of restaurants for a great meal. The go-to places are Etablissement 1880 for its specialties and De Drie Koningen in Groede for its convivial atmosphere. The latter is a Grand Café with its own brewery. Fun detail: they have a lovely house beer: Marckensteijn. This beer is brewed at the back of the café. But you can definitely have a delicious bite to eat there too! If you are on the beach and looking for a meal there, Strandhuys de Vrijbuyter organises fun cocktail nights in summer and you can get a tasty bite to eat there as well.
